The EAP Courses are named using the respective departmental course codes. For example, an EAP course in the Psychology Department is listed as PSY/E 179 — English for Academic Purposes I, and the follow-up course as PSY/E 180 — English for Academic Purposes II.
“English for Academic Purposes” is a course designed to develop the academic language skills needed by students in order to be successful in their academic departments. The course focuses on academic language skills required by all university students as well as specific academic language skills of primary importance for students' specific fields of choice. Students will be guided through the various stages of writing, including planning, researching, collecting and organizing information.
Students will be working with both semi-authentic and authentic academic texts. The course aims to introduce efficient reading strategies to cope with such texts as well as to increase students' confidence and comprehensibility when delivering presentations. Academic writing, listening, speaking and reading skills development will be emphasized in the course. Additionally, students' skills in paraphrasing, summarizing and note-taking will be developed.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to fulfill the academic English skills requirements of the department they are studying in.

Attendance
Students are expected to regularly attend all their lessons in the English for Academic Purposes Program. Attendance is recorded each day by the instructor and can drastically affect a student’s final grade. EAP uses on-going assessment which means that grades are given throughout the semester based on some or all of the following criteria:
Students are expected to do the in-class assignments/homework given by their instructors. These could be readings, online work, activity sheets or writings required by the instructor.
Projects are longer assignments that will result in some type of demonstration or production for the instructor or class. Projects vary depending upon the department.
These are common quizzes and students cannot be excused from these and/or given a make-up test even if they have a valid health report. Students may or may not be informed about the dates of these common quizzes. Students who don’t take these quizzes receive a 0 (zero) for each test that they miss.
Students will use BilgiLearn on a regular basis to obtain information and inorder to complete learning tasks, assignments, discussion forums and assessment. They will be also be expected to complete weekly online tasks. Students are therefore responsible for learning how to use BilgiLearn inorder to succeed at their studies. The evaluation of online work is automatically recorded by their instructors.
Participation
Students are expected to come to lessons prepared with their materials, books and notebooks. They are also expected to participate during the lessons. Participation includes contributing to class discussions, working with peers, and coming to class regularly in addition to being prepared for that day.
Academic courtesy: Academic courtesy means acceptable behavior in an academic environment. In other words, students are expected to arrive to class on time, show respect to peers and instructor, and come to class prepared with the necessary materials. Moreover, students are responsible for following rules of classroom conduct in addition to university rules. Repeated violations will result in disciplinary action.
Academic honesty: Unethical behavior such as cheating and plagiarism will be officially recorded by the academic staff and reported to the Student Affairs Office which will result in disciplinary action and failing grade on the task or assignment. Plagiarism is claiming somebody else’s work as your own and it is students’ responsibility to credit work they have cited.
“Burden of Proof”: If the instructor doubts that a student has completed his or her work independently, it is the student’s responsibility to show that he or she completed the task on his or her own at each and every stage. Failure to provide evidence is grounds for receiving a failing grade on the assignment.
